Get Moinked: 5 Ways to Make Better Food Choices in 2018

Happy New Year everyone! Are you thinking about setting some 2018 healthy eating goals? We can help boil them down into two words: Get Moinked!

Make Better Food Choices in 2018

Here Are 5 Ways You Can Make Better Food Choices Over the Next 12 Months:

M – Make a Connection
It’s time to get up close and personal with the items we’re feeding our families. Take a little time to learn about the farmers and their production models. Are they good stewards of the animals, land and environment? How are the animals and crops raised, harvested and processed? Can you follow your everyday food items from farm to table and feel good about the whole process? Asking a few simple questions and demanding answers will help us weed out the riff-raff, and have more peace of mind with every bite!

O – Opt Out
Millennials get a bad rap, but that generation is leading the charge in helping us become more mindful about the companies we support. It’s time for us to take a hard look at the brands we’re buying and decide if they align with our values, and if we really want them to profit from our purchases. We CAN opt out of big food companies who are part of the problem and not the solution when it comes to our broken food system. We vote with our purse strings.

I – Invest in Quality
I wholeheartedly believe eating high-quality food is worth the investment. If you can, spend a little extra to buy your kid that all-natural granola bar without the high-fructose corn syrup, or get the organic strawberries that haven’t been sprayed with toxic pesticides. When it comes to meat, if buying quality means buying less, it’s worth the sacrifice. I don’t know about you, but I’m willing to have a meatless Monday here and there if it means I get a tender, juicy grass-fed steak on Friday (Mmmmm, now I want steak!). Remember, we are what we eat, and there’s a high cost to cheap food!

N – No More Junk
Here’s the hard one, because it means changing our daily habits. Folks, we have to cut out all the junk. By now, we all know that many of the foods in our grocery stores really aren’t foods at all! And as Queen Oprah always preached, “When you know better, you do better.” It’s time to say no to antibiotics, hormones, GMOs, dyes, artificial sweeteners, chemicals and all the other funk that’s made its way into our homes and bellies. Make 2018 about feeding yourself and your loved ones real food.

K – Kick It Up a Notch
Once you go to all that trouble to bring home better food for your family, it would be a shame if you didn’t take the time to make it yummy! Make this the year you take that cooking class, or actually attempt some of those Pinterest recipes you’ve pinned over the last 5 years. Break out that fancy kitchen gadget that’s been collecting dust while your microwave works overtime, or splurge on that grill you’ve been wanting. Set aside some time to meal plan each week so you don’t have to resort to drive-thru dinners. Most importantly, invite the people you love to come enjoy a meal with you.

Some of the best moments in life happen around the table. You gotta eat every day, so you might as well eat really well, and have a little fun along the way.
